Deputy Head of Sound - London

We are seeking a passionate and motivated individual to join the Sound department for a musical on a fixed-term basis.
As Deputy Head of Sound, you’ll work with the Head of Automation, Production Manager, General and Company Management. Your focus will be on supporting the smooth running of production through effective communication and maintaining continuity across all sound elements to ensure seamless backstage operations.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Assist the Head of Sound to manage, supervise, and schedule members of the sound team.
• Provide cover on the sound desk for performances, replicating the show's sound design.
• Perform daily setup, sound rig checks and provide communication within the Sound team.
• Prepare, maintain, and repair sound system elements, including speakers, microphones, radio transmitters, orchestra pit installations, and comms/video equipment under the direction of the Head of Sound, Production Manager, and Creative Team.
• Manage departmental finances for pre-production and running.
• Assist the Head of Sound in liaising with Company Management, Stage Management, technical departments, Creative, Production, General Management, and venue staff to ensure smooth rehearsals and performances.
• Acquire a familiarity with all plots/tracks within the sound department in order to provide holiday or absence cover for other members of department as required.
• Take an active role in teaching staff to ensure the smooth running of the production.
• Report and feedback show and related staff-related issues promptly.
• Attend rehearsal, technical, dress and understudy rehearsals as required.
• Ensure awareness of understudy and swing performances ahead of each show and make necessary adjustments.
• Acquire familiarity with all plots/tracks within the Sound department to provide holiday or absence cover for other members of the department as required.
• Attend weekly head of department meetings in the absence of the Head of Department.
• Work in full compliance with Disney’s Health and Safety Policy and maintain knowledge of relevant legislation and best practices.

Skills Required

• Experience in a similar role within a large-scale musical production, working alongside an international cast, is highly desirable.
• Knowledge of setting up, maintaining, and operating sound systems.
• Transparent and open approach, able to work well under pressure, and enjoy leading from the front and by example.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to foster positive working relationships across departments.
• Excellent initiative and practical problem-solving skills, particularly in high-pressure backstage situations.
• Able to handle issues that arise during performances with focus, professionalism, and composure.
• Clear and confident communicator, with the ability to make informed decisions and collaborate effectively with cast, creative, and production teams.
• Solid understanding of health and safety legislation relevant to the role, including LOLER, PUWER, and Working at Height regulations.
• Proven ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently.
• Highly effective team player with strong collaboration skills.
• Capable of following instructions and adhering to department protocols.
• Motivated to learn new skills and committed to upholding the quality of a major production.
• Demonstrates discretion and professionalism when working closely with others.
• Well-organised and detail-oriented in all aspects of work.

Additional Information

• Fixed-term Contract, 48 hours per week.
• Start date: early 2027. Run dates 2027-2028.
• Monday-Saturday schedule with a midweek and weekend matinee.
• This role will require the candidate to understand and follow the Health and Safety rules & Regulations at the production
