Deputy Head of Wigs, Hair and Make-up - London

We are seeking a passionate and motivated individual to join the Wigs, Hair and Make-up (WHAM) department for a musical on a fixed-term basis.
As Deputy Head of Wigs, Hair & Make-Up Assistant, you'll work with the Head of WHAM, Production Manager, General and Company Management. Your focus will be on supporting the smooth running of production through effective communication and maintaining excellent standard across the WHAM team to ensure seamless backstage operations.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assist the Head of WHAM to manage, supervise and schedule members of the WHAM team.
  • Perform daily setup, oversee wigs pre-sets, and provide communication within the wigs team.
  • Responsible for repairing wigs, maintaining the show's design as dictated by the artistic requirements and under the direction of the Production Manager and Creative Team.
  • Ensure all wigs are cleaned, maintained, and performance-ready for each show.
  • Conduct wigs fittings when required to do so.
  • Report and feedback show and staff-related issues in a timely manner.
  • Assist the Head of Wigs, Hair and Make Up in creating accurate production paperwork and ensure the efficient flow of information as necessary for the smooth running of the show.
  • Acquire familiarity with all plots/tracks within the wigs department to provide holiday or absence cover for other members of the department as required.
  • Assist the Head of WHAM in liaising with the Company Manager, Creative Team, Production, and General Management and Tech teams to ensure smooth rehearsals and performances.
  • Assist the Head of Wigs, Hair and Make Up to create accurate production paperwork and ensure the efficient flow of information as necessary for the smooth running of the show.
  • Take an active role in teaching new members of staff, deps and local dressers and wigs staff and work closely with the theatre staff to ensure the smooth running of the production.
  • Ensure awareness of understudy and swing performances ahead of each show and make necessary adjustments.
  • Attend rehearsal, technical, dress and understudy rehearsals as required.
  • Attend weekly Head of Department meetings in the absence of the Head of WHAM.
  • Work in full compliance with Disney’s Health and Safety Policy and maintain knowledge of relevant legislation and best practices.

Skills Required

  • Experience in a similar role within a large-scale musical production, particularly those involving international casts and the opening of new shows, is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of wig construction, maintenance, and materials is essential; barbering or hairdressing skills across all hair types are desirable.
  • Confident and experienced working with textured hair and wigs.
  • Skilled in repairing, styling and preserving wigs to a high theatrical standard.
  • Experience in period-specific hair styling for stage productions.
  • Understanding of theatrical makeup and application techniques, including fashion and stage-specific products.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cast, creatives, and crew.
  • Sound understanding of health and safety practices in a backstage environment.
  • Proven ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently.
  • Highly effective team player with strong collaboration skills.
  • Capable of following instructions and adhering to department protocols.
  • Motivated to learn new skills and committed to upholding the quality of a major production.
  • Demonstrates discretion and professionalism when working closely with others.
  • Well-organised and detail-oriented in all aspects of work.

Additional Information

  • Fixed-term Contract, 48 hours per week.
  • Start date: early 2027. Run dates 2027-2028.
  • Monday-Saturday schedule with a midweek and weekend matinee.
  • This role will require the candidate to understand and follow the Health and Safety rules & Regulations at the production
