Head of Stage - The Lion King, London
We are seeking a passionate and motivated individual to lead the Stage department for Disney's The Lion King at London's Lyceum.
As Head of Stage, you will work closely with the Production Manager, General Management, Company Management, and Stage Management. You will act as the main point of contact between the Disney office and the Stage department, taking the lead on Health and Safety within your team and contributing to the overall excellence of the production.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Assist the Stage Manager and Deputy Stage Manager by liaising between the Company Manager, Technical departments, Creative Team, Production, General Management Teams, and local venue staff to ensure the smooth running of all rehearsals and performances.
- Manage, supervise, and schedule members of the Stage team.
- Support the Stage Manager by managing the backstage and onstage areas during performances, overseeing scene changes to ensure these take place safely.
- Ensure all scenic elements and stage equipment are maintained and in full working order for each performance.
- Maintain the quality of the show as instructed by Production Manager and Creative Team.
- Perform daily setup, oversee stage checks, and provide communication within Stage team.
- Report and provide feedback on show- and staff-related issues in a timely manner.
- Create and maintain accurate production paperwork, ensuring the efficient flow of information for the smooth running of the show.
- Acquire familiarity with all plots/tracks within the Stage department to provide cover during holidays or absences.
- Take an active role in teaching and mentoring new staff, working closely with theatre personnel to ensure the smooth running of production.
- Ensure awareness of understudy and swing performances ahead of each show and make necessary adjustments.
- Attend rehearsals as required.
- Attend weekly Head of Department meetings.
- Work in full compliance with Disney's Health and Safety Policy and maintain knowledge of relevant legislation and best practices.
Skills Required
- Experience in a similar role within a large-scale musical production, working alongside an international cast and creative team, is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of setting up, maintaining, and operating Stage systems, with a solid understanding of stage management practices and backstage operations.
- Comfortable working at height as part of performance or tech setups.
- Clear, confident communication and decision-making skills are essential.
- Ability to remain focused and calm under pressure.
- Transparent and open approach; able to work well under pressure and lead by example to motivate and guide the stage team.
- Strong initiative and practical problem-solving abilities to address challenges quickly and efficiently backstage.
- Knowledge and understanding of relevant H&S legislation, including LOLER, PUWER, and WAH, and ability to apply safe working practices backstage.
- Proven ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently.
- Highly effective team player with strong collaboration skills.
- Capable of following instructions and adhering to department protocols.
- Motivated to learn new skills and committed to upholding the quality of a major production.
- Demonstrates discretion and professionalism when working closely with others.
- Well-organised and detail-oriented in all aspects of work.
Additional Information
- Fixed-term Contract, 48 hours per week.
- Start date: October 2026.
- Tuesday to Sunday (evening and weekend show schedule)
- This role will require the candidate to understand and follow the Health and Safety Rules & Regulations at the production.
