Music Intern - The Lion King, London

Are you interested in working on one of Disney's most iconic musicals? We are seeking a Music Intern to join the team for one to three days per week over six weeks, offering an immersive insight into the workings of a large-scale musical theatre production. You will work closely with the Musical Director, gaining first-hand experience of rehearsal leadership, conducting cast and orchestra, and the vital role of the Musical Director in bringing a live performance to life.

Job Role / Learning Summary

Through a series of sessions and workshops, you will explore:

  • The role and responsibilities of a Musical Director within a large-scale musical theatre production.
  • Collaboration across the creative and production departments involved in bringing a musical to life.
  • Theatre-specific piano and keyboard techniques for rehearsals and orchestra pit settings.
  • Conducting techniques and approaches in musical theatre.
  • Preparing to Musical Direct a production.
  • Depping (covering as a substitute musician) within musical theatre.
  • The rehearsal process, including ensemble vocal coaching.
  • The African languages featured in The Lion King.

The content and focus of the sessions will be tailored to the selected candidate, ensuring the program aligns with their experience, goals, and development needs.

Who we're looking for:

  • Aged 18 or over
  • Must be available to work daytime and evening hours.
  • Comfortable working at heights when required.
  • Should have strong piano playing ability and be currently studying or looking to study piano at undergraduate level or equivalent. Recently graduated would also be suitable. However, having a qualification or degree is not a necessity.
  • Should have an interest in conducting - experience desirable but not essential.
  • Someone who is keen to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Someone with an interest in a diverse range of music and styles.

Additional Information

  • Start Date: Tuesday 3 November 2026
  • End Date: Sunday 13 December 2026
  • Rate of Pay: London Living Wage (£13.15 per hour) + travel expenses
  • Commitment: 1 to 3 days per week, for 6 weeks
  • This is a non-accredited learning opportunity.

How to apply:

Please prepare and send videos of the following:

  • A short classical piece or extract you enjoy playing (learned from sheet music – max 2 mins)
  • A contrasting piece from pop, rock, musical theatre or jazz that demonstrates rhythm piano playing and strong time-keeping (can be sheet music, by ear, or improvised – max 2 mins)
